DEFINITIONAssists in the daily operation of the school health office; administers first aid to ill and injured students; performs a variety of clerical duties relating to the school health program.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class serve under the supervision of a school nurse and are assigned to the health office at elementary, middle and high schools.
The class of Health Clerk is distinguished from that of Clerk in that the Health Clerk performs duties with greater initiative under limited supervision and works in a more direct manner with students and parents as a result of contacts in the school health office.
In addition, incumbents are required to perform more complex clerical tasks such as maintaining student health records with confidential medical information as required by law, verifying student compliance and typing/keyboarding at a rate equivalent to thirty words per minute (wpm) or better.

- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS
Education:
Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to possess the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities established for the position; must possess a secondary (i.e., high school) school diploma, or its equivalent.Experience:
Six (6) months of clerical or other paid or unpaid experience working with school age children.
SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Must obtain a standard First Aid Certificate and complete a Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course within thirty (30) days of employment and obtain annual CPR re-certification.
- The ability to read, write and speak a language in addition to English, such as Spanish or Armenian, is desirable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of a position with or without reasonable accommodation and without hazard to themselves or others. May be required to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds.- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Assists in the maintenance of confidential student health records by typing, filing, recording information, etc.
- Types information onto forms and lists; administers first aid to ill or injured students.
- Provides supervision as the situation requires.
- Verifies student compliance with health requirements.
- Maintains a daily log of first aid services to students.
- Answers questions providing information on health procedures, programs, etc.
- Maintains and restocks first-aid kits and health office supplies.
- Measures height and weight of students.
- Contacts parents to give or obtain health information.
- Types and distributes health notices and information to teachers and parents
- Assists in various health clinics performing necessary clerical work.
- Operates a variety of office equipment such as typewriter, copiers, etc.
- Performs other related duties as required.

APPOINTMENT
Employees who receive a regular appointment to the class must serve a probationary period of one hundred and thirty (130) days of paid service. During this period, an employee must demonstrate an overall satisfactory level of performance; failure to do so shall result in the employee's termination without right of appeal to the Human Resources Department.
Pay is based on actual hours worked.
