Description

Position is limited to 20hrs/wk or 960 hours in a fiscal year

Under close supervision, perform tasks to assist library personnel, including monitoring of user behavior, routine clerical work and related duties.

Job Characteristic:  May work a varying schedule of hours which may include early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Examples of Duties

  • Monitor patron conduct in the library.
  • Read shelves for correctness in arrangement of books.
  • Attach book labels and book pockets in books.
  • Prepare magazines for circulation.
  • Clear tables of books and magazines.
  • Check out, receive and discharge books at loan desk as assigned.
  • Run errands.
  • Assist in arranging chairs and tables in multi-purpose room.
  • Sort and shelve books and other library materials.
  • Assist with operation of computer workstation and general library automation activities.

  • Deal courteously and tactfully with the public.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Place books and other items in alphabetical and numerical order without error.
  • Accurately perform simple routines on a computer terminal.
  • Perform light physical work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is performed in a Library environment and requires standing for prolonged periods of time.  An incumbent stands, walks, and may twist, reach, bend, crouch and kneel.  May require the ability to climb ladders or step stools, push or pull book carts, lift and carry books or move boxes of materials weighing up to 25 pounds from one location to another.  Tasks require visual perception and discrimination as well as oral communications ability.  An incumbent must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:  Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.  A valid California driver's license is required.
