The Pasadena City Attorney's Office is seeking a seasoned Legal Assistant with experience in Legal Defense Litigation. The ideal candidate will perform a variety of complex legal, secretarial and administrative duties of a highly responsible and confidential nature for attorneys and/or paralegals requiring considerable knowledge of legal procedures for the civil division of the City Attorney/City Prosecutor's Office. - Prepares, finalizes and processes complex legal documents including responsive pleadings, motions, briefs and discovery; prepares, records and/or transcribes complex and confidential reports, minutes, ordinances, resolutions, proclamations, contracts, correspondence, memoranda, reports and other legal documents and materials; composes letters from notes or brief instructions; proofreads and corrects documents and pleadings for accuracy, grammar and appearance; may perform simple legal research.
- Communicates with Court personnel, City staff, attorneys, medical experts, expert witnesses, and others.
- Schedules and maintains calendars for assigned attorneys, including computing/calendaring case deadlines, calendaring court appearances, scheduling and coordinating depositions, appointments, and vacations.
- Electronically files pleadings and other court forms through automated federal and state court systems; prepares copies for attorneys and judges; creates and maintains complex and confidential filing systems; opens and closes case files in case management system; prints, scans and/or archives documents, emails and records; maintains legal library; maintains files of newspaper articles relating to City business, interests and development; assists with a variety of office administrative tasks.
- Requests/subpoenas records, files, and other data; tracks legal service to other attorneys as assigned.
- May assist in training administrative employees and interns.

- Qualification Guidelines
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a two-year college with an Associate's degree and at least four years of progressively responsible experience in a law office in an administrative or clerical role providing legal support; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Experience in a public agency is preferred.
Experience in civil defense litigation is desired.
EXAMINATION PROCESS
The examination process will consist of an evaluation of training and experience, with the most highly qualified candidates being invited to participate in a written exam and/ or interview.

Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and comply with the City's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment.
