JOB SUMMARY
Persons in these positions work 3 hours per day, Monday - Friday, during school sessionThis eligibility list will also be used to fill substitute assignments that come up throughout the year (substitute rate is $18.67 per hour). Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of clerical duties of moderate difficulty and related to student health care; performs minor first aid; maintains student health records; performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Records and maintains student health data; (i.e.maintains records of students referred to the school health office, medication records, and immunization records) all in a confidential manner.
  • Assures there is a health record on file for every student, and alerts school nurse to serious medical conditions e.g. diabetes, seizures, cardiac problems, cancer, and any severe allergies. 
  • Takes temperatures; administers minor first aid; administers student medications in accordance with established district policy and procedures.
  • Notifies site administrator and school nurses as early as possible of serious illness or injury.
  • Performs specialized health procedures, (i.e. basic blood sugar readings, assists in asthmatic breathing treatments or toileting) as trained and assigned.
  • Keeps health office and equipment clean and orderly; maintains inventory of health office and first aid supplies and submits orders, as appropriate.
  • Serves as a continuing liaison between home and school; distributes health notices.
  • Assists parents in completing necessary enrollment, consent, and medical forms.
  • Assists in the process of meeting identified medical needs of children and following up within district guidelines.
  • Makes referrals to community resources for children and families, in accordance with guidelines.
  • Monitors class­room and school attendance patterns.
  • Compiles required statistics and reports for Federal, State, and local agencies as required.
  • Performs a variety of related clerical duties.
  • Participates in scheduled staff development meetings, as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in the health room of a school with regular exposure to a variety of illnesses and ailments (including exposure to bodily fluids), commonly found among schoolchildren; goes to and from various sites on campus to attend to ill or injured students.  This position requires frequently standing, walking, or sitting. There is some bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching required. Light lifting is frequently required. Heavy lifting/pulling of up to 50 pounds is rarely required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school, or equivalent. One year of experience in office clerical work is desirable.  Some experience working with community service organizations is highly desirable. Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

CERTIFICATE: Must possess and maintain per CPR and First Aid guidelines a valid First Aid Certificate and a Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (through classes endorsed by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross).  A copy of current First Aid and CPR certification cards must be submitted at the time of the oral rating exam.  Certificates obtained through online classes endorsed by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross will be accepted.

  • Resources and services available in the local school community.
  • Current first aid and CPR principles and practices, as well as related health and safety precautions.
  • Personal hygiene practices.
Ability to:
  • Understand and apply rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.
  • Maintain accurate records.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and others in the community.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Follow current universal precautions relative to first aid methods and appropriate responses to illness and injury.
  • Understand and correctly implement specialized medical procedures as trained (i.e. blood sugar levels, seizures, allergic reactions).
  • Work with frequent interruptions.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

Applications will be accepted from the general public and district employ­ees who possess the above qualifications.  The district reserves the right to invite applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the requirements needed for the position to continue in the examination process. The examination may consist of an evaluation of training and experience, multiple choice, performance, and oral/technical exams.  Persons needing reasonable accommodation must notify the Office of Personnel Services by the last day to file.  A qualifying score must be achieved on all portions of the examination in order to be placed on the open eligibility list.  Outside and district candidates will be placed on one ranked list, with eligible permanent district employees receiving five seniority points which will be added to their final scores.

VETERAN'S CREDIT: Veterans shall have an additional five (5) points added to their final percentage score on an open eligibility list as prescribed by Education Code, Section 45296. "Veteran" as used in this article means any person who has served in the United States armed forces in time of war, or national emergency declared by the President of the United States of America, and who has been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. "Armed forces" means the United States Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. At least thirty (30) days of active service are required to obtain veteran preference points.

Disabled veterans shall have an additional ten (10) points added to their final percentage score on an open eligibility list as prescribed by Education Code, Section 45296. A "disabled veteran" as used in this article means any veteran who is currently declared by the United States Veterans Administration to be ten percent (10%) or more disabled as a result of service in the Armed Forces of the United States. Proof of disability shall be deemed conclusive if it is of record in the United States Veterans Administration.

Additional eligibility may be granted based on future changes to the law and verification from the Veteran's Administration or the United States Office of Personnel Management.

In order to obtain credit, the applicant shall furnish satisfactory proof of qualifying military service prior to establishment of the eligibility list. No adjustment of rank on the list shall be made when such proof is presented thereafter.

A veteran may be credited veterans' preference points only to obtain initial employment in the district. Thereafter, the only additional points for an open examination shall be seniority points granted in accord with section 4220.3(C)2.

HIRING PROCEDURES: Garden Grove is a merit system (civil service) school district. Employment and promotions are based upon merit, fitness and qualifications. The person selected to fill any regular position will be from among the top three ranks on the eligibility list approved by the Personnel Commission. All regular employees will serve a six (6) month probation.

EXAMINATION FOR TUBERCULOSISProof of freedom from active tuberculosis must be furnished prior to employment and must be based upon an intradermal Mantoux tuberculin skin test completed within the last 60 days.

FINGERPRINTING: All new employees will be fingerprinted.
