The Position

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of moderately difficult and routine clerical and typing tasks within established guidelines and performs related duties as required; receives, prepares, distributes and files a wide variety of materials and payments in accordance with prescribed program/departmental procedures; communicates with the public on the phone or in person; provides general information regarding City services; types a wide variety of materials, including those of confidential or sensitive nature; works with information or records subject to privacy rights of individuals and/or information subject to the decision making process of the City; compiles data and assists in the compilation of complex data for reports and projects; operates standard office equipment and machines, including a personal computer; arranges meetings and schedules appointments; copies, collates and staples materials by hand or machine; fold, insert and seal materials in envelopes; keeps and maintains department records within pre-established guidelines by transferring data, matching, sorting, tabulating and filing data and/or records; maintains files that include confidential records; may act in lead capacity over volunteers, student workers and/or part-time staff.

The current opening is in the Economic Development Division. The eligibility list established as a result of this recruitment may be used to fill vacancies in other City departments for up to one (1) year.


Knowledge of modern office practices, methods and procedures; correct spelling, punctuation and grammatical usage; proper telephone and reception procedures and techniques; business correspondence; various office equipment such as typewriter, adding machine, facsimile, personal computer with word processing and spreadsheet software. Skills/Abilities - Computer literate. Ability to type at a net rate of 45 words per minute; make arithmetic computations, transcribe dictation from notes or audio tape; handle difficult public contacts calmly and tactfully, work cooperatively with peers, superiors and the public; communicate clearly both  orally and in writing using  proper English, grammar and punctuation; apply confidentiality, courtesy and tact in a variety of public and staff contacts; learn new computer programs; follow oral and written directions; Education and Experience - Any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be graduation from high school or equivalent, plus one year of office clerical work including typing and contact with the general public. Experience working for a local governmental or non-profit agency especially in a Community and Economic Development capacity is highly desirable.
NOTE:  The typing certificate is not required at this time. Applicants that do have a five-minute timed typing test certificate from an approved agency should submit the certificate with their application. The certificate must indicate the name of the institution where the certificate was obtained, the date, the signature and title of the person verifying the typing test and the phone number. Internet typing tests/certificates are not accepted.  The certificate must be issued and dated within four years of the application date. If you are not able to obtain or provide a typing certificate dated within four years of the application date, the City will facilitate a time where a typing test can be conducted sometime during the selection process for candidates who move forward in the process.


Candidate's whose education and experience appear to best meet the City's needs will be invited to take the written examination. Those who pass the written examination will be invited to the Oral Board Interview. A candidate must pass all components of the testing process to qualify for the position. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an invitation to further testing.
