Job Summary

The College of Humanities and the Arts Student Success Center is a learning support, academic assistance, retention and service-oriented unit within the College of Humanities and the Arts. The mission of the Center is to facilitate successful student persistence through the completion of the baccalaureate degree at SJSU.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and the Arts and receiving work lead direction from the College of Humanities and Arts Student Success Center Director, the incumbent works independently and with a team of advisors under general direction to provide academic advising, student success data analysis, and related support services for students in all majors in the College of Humanities and the Arts. Such services may include providing information and guidance to students; helping students think through problems and select suitable solutions or courses of action; evaluating student needs and authorizing services; creating, coordinating, and administering programs, events, and projects; articulating the needs of individual students and groups of students to university administrators, faculty, and staff; and providing support and assistance to students facing a variety of personal as well as institutional problems, questions, and challenges.

Working independently, the Academic Advisor develops, coordinates, implements and assesses strategies and academic support services to ensure student retention and success through timely graduation. The advisor also evaluates and analyzes student success related data and reports such analyses to the Director, Dean, and chairs. The advisor gathers, synthesizes, and presents student success information, as appropriate, to the Director, Dean, chairs, and program coordinators to improve effectiveness in student success as it relates, for example, to scheduling, articulation, retention, graduation rates, student satisfaction, and other critically important issues.
