DESCRIPTION

The City of Long Beach Department of Library Services is seeking interested candidates to apply for the position of Library Clerk I, Non-Career. Under general supervision, Non-Career Library Clerks perform a wide variety of clerical duties and interface with library patrons in providing public and technical library services at possibly all 12 Long Beach Public Library locations.

Non-Career employees are limited to 1,600 work hours per service year, are not guaranteed a minimum number of work hours, and are considered temporary, at-will employees. Typical hours for this position vary between 15 and 20 per week. Non-Career employees are not typically eligible for health/dental/vision benefits; however, they may be eligible for sick leave benefits.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs circulation and service desk duties using the automated system to check out and check in library materials and registers new borrowers;
  • Receives, refunds, and reconciles cash;
  • Interprets and resolves questions regarding library circulation policies and procedures;
  • Uses automated system to receive, transmit, and adjust information;
  • Prepares books and library materials for circulation;
  • Maintains statistical and other records;
  • Types letters, reports, and forms;
  • Operates office machines; and,
  • Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

  • One (1) year full time experience performing routine clerical and customer service duties in a library system or six (6) months full time experience performing routine clerical duties with the CIty of Long Beach Public Library System;
  • Completion of twelve (12) units in library science may be substituted for the six (6) months full time experience performing routine clerical duties with the City of Long Beach Public Library System;
  • Some positions may require the routine lifting of 20 to 40 pounds;
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required at time of appointment.
*The City of Long Beach requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless a medical or religious exemption is approved by the CIty of Long Beach's Human Resources Department.

SUCCESFUL CANDIDATES WILL DEMONSTRATE:
  • Organization skills, meticulous with details, and ability to complete paperwork accurately and consistently;
  • Strong computer skills (Internet, MS Office, databases) and the ability to learn library related technology;
  • Ability to work weekends, and evenings; and,
  • Ability to exercise professionalism by combining tact, patience, and a personable demeanor.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
