Intermediate Typist Clerk

     WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT, INDUSTRIAL WASTE SECTION, FIELD ENGINEERING, INSPECTION, AND MONITORING GROUP, JAO


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To accomplish progressively more responsible clerical and typing tasks; and to provide a wide variety of office support duties with increasing independence and proficiency.

JOB SUMMARY:  
   Under general supervision, the incumbent performs a variety of clerical work including compiling, typing, proofreading, recording, filing, coding and checking information; operating office machines such as terminals, computers, typewriters, calculators, adding machines, fax machines and document copying equipment; utilizing various computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets and databases software; typing letters, memoranda, reports, purchase orders, forms and other material from rough drafts, tape recordings, notes or verbal instructions; completing and checking records, statistical data and performing arithmetic calculations; receiving and responding to inquiries from the public, other employees, contractors and vendors; answering phones and taking messages; performing field time account maintenance and/or field purchase order and invoice completion coordination duties; proofing, editing and finalizing a variety of reports, letters, documents, memoranda and forms; overseeing the work of lower level clerical workers; sorting and filing operational data; using computer applications to enter data into forms and templates; sending, receiving and distributing incoming and outgoing mail such as letters, forms and applications, composing or completing some items; reviewing, distributing and processing monetary transactions; and performing related duties as required.

The INTERMEDIATE TYPIST CLERK differs from the Typist Clerk II class by the greater typing proficiency and clerical knowledge required to independently perform assignments. This level is used in the following assignments: 1) The fully experienced working level class of the series for positions performing general office and typing duties; 2) Specialty assignments related to timekeeping and/or office purchasing; or 3) The entry level class for positions allocated primarily as word processors.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess one year of clerical or typing experience performing duties equivalent to or above the Typist Clerk II level. 

EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

     The competitive selection process for may cover knowledge of:  English grammar, spelling and punctuation; operation of office equipment including a desktop computer; record keeping methods.  The ability to:  Perform routine clerical work including reading comprehension; prepare correspondence; learn and apply office procedures; maintain files and records; operate a variety of office equipment including document scanners and copying machines; operate a computer; and utilize various software applications.  The ability to type at a rate of 50 words per minute from clear copy with a maximum 10% error rate.

 SELECTION PROCESS:
      Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires will be reviewed and evaluated for relevant experience and/or coursework.

  • The selection process will consist of a written test weighted 50%, and an interview weighted 50%.
  • Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process.
