Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of routine technical and clerical library duties in support of the various sections of the library; process library materials; and provide general assistance. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Circulation: sort and shelve books alphabetically and numerically for different sections including fiction, non-fiction, new books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, large print books, international language books, and paperbacks; straighten shelves and loose books; or Technical Services: assists in preparing library materials to be put on the shelves including: clean/repair CDs and DVDs; label and stamp government publications; label, stamp, and sticker books; apply labels and stickers to CDs; add covers to books; organize and repair magazines; repair books; or LAMP Literacy & Citizenship: making copies of classroom materials and handouts for ESL and literacy tutors and office correspondence and matters, maintaining volunteer hours and roster, and providing assistance where possible to the Senior Library Clerk and Adult Literacy Coordinator.
This position will work a varied schedule of approximately 15-19 hours per week and must be available to work (among other hours) evenings and weekends.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of the English alphabet; basic mathematical principles; basic filing procedures; and use of word processing systems. Ability to learn the Dewey Decimal and Classification Systems; learn basic library services and functions; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Education and Experience - Any combination of training and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. Example (but not required): High School graduate or GED. A valid Class “C” California Driver license is desirable. Physical Characteristics: Requires: stooping, kneeling or bending to pick up or move objects; reaching to pick up or move various objects over one's head; standing for long periods of time; operating various equipment such as computer keyboard and typewriter using finger dexterity; reading books, written materials, and computer screens; lifting objects up to 25 pounds; pushing and moving with help objects such as a book truck weighing up to 75 pounds.
SELECTION PROCESS
The candidates who appear to best meet the needs of the Library, based upon a review of the submitted applications, will be invited to take the written examination. Those who pass the written examination will be invited to the Oral Board Interview. The interview will evaluate, on a competitive basis, the work experience, educational background and qualifications of each candidate. All applicants must be able to prove legal United States residency at the time of appointment. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an invitation to further testing.

The Eligibility List will be good for one year. Library staff will interview from the List starting at the top as vacancies occur.
Staff will check references of the top candidates.
If a candidate has another job, he or she will need to get approval from the City to have additional paid employment.
The library sets the work schedule. Classes, vacations or other employment must be worked around when the Library needs the Page.
A person must be at least 15-1/2 years of age to work for the City. Those under the age of 18 must have a work permit. High school graduates and minors who have been awarded a certificate of proficiency pursuant to EC 48412 (such certificate being equivalent to a high school diploma) do not require work permits.
As the City does not pay into Social Security, the City will deduct 3.5% from an employee’s pay and the City will contribute 4% on behalf of the employee into an account provided for part-time employees. The mandatory 1.45 percent for Medicare will also be deducted from the Page’s paycheck. (The money in the part-time account is refunded when the person leaves).
