Organizes, conducts and supervises a variety of recreational programs and activities; performs related duties as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This class is distinguished from Recreation Leader I by its responsibility for higher level recreation program work including the organization and instruction of various programs and activities and providing lead direction to others.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Recreation Coordinator.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED May provide lead direction over assistants, volunteers or Recreation Leaders I.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assists in planning, directing and running playground programs, related tournaments, community and regional type contests, arts, craft shows or exhibitions, dance recitals and sports events. Helps officiate and instruct in games such as basketball, softball, baseball, volleyball, track and field.
May perform work as a field supervisor, playground attendant, MTA assistant or office clerk. Prepares reports, maintains records and performs related duties as assigned.
Supervises overall activities of playground or other sites; observes and monitors activities of participants to ensure that park rules and regulations are followed and that equipment is used in a safe manner; administers first aid as needed.
May assist with facility set-up for events; may perform some custodial functions.
Education and/or Experience:
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to (1) one year of paid or volunteer experience working with children or youth; presentation of games, sports, arts or crafts in a recreational setting.
Special Requirements:
Possession of American Red Cross C.P.R. and First Aid cards may be required.
Possession of a valid California Driver License may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: the programs common to recreation, sports and aquatics programs; first aid techniques.
Ability to: supervise and monitor games and team activities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, instructors and the general public; follow oral instructions; work varied hours.

An incumbent appointed to this position is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program. The Pull Notice program provides information on the incumbent's driving record and Driver's License status on a periodic basis to the City of South Gate. An employee assigned a City vehicle must acknowledge receipt and understanding of City Administrative Regulations covering the use of City vehicles.
