Description

DEADLINE TO APPLY: This is a continuous recruitment. Applications will be reviewed periodically. Upon receiving a sufficient number of qualified applications, this recruitment may close without prior knowledge.  

Under direct supervision, provides assistance and instruction to a wide-range of students in grades K-12 with homework, supplemental tutoring, completing assignments, and checking for accuracy of schoolwork. Assist students with basic math through Calculus, Reading, Writing, English, History, and Sciences.  Participate cooperatively in work team activities and may be required to perform other library-related tasks as assigned. Current CalPERS members are not eligible to apply for this position. 

Examples of Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  1. Provides subject-specific content to help students through drop-in assistance.
  2. Reviews student classroom or curricula topics and assignments.
  3. Assists students with homework, projects, and test preparation.
  4. Works with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom.
  5. Teaches skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills and approaches to answering test questions.
  6. Recognizes different learning styles and student preferences.
  7. Motivates and supports students through positive feedback and reinforcement.
  8. Communicates with parents as applicable.
  9. Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures.
  10. Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:
Academic subjects such as English, Writing, Mathematics, Science and History.
Appropriate and effective learning techniques and concepts for learners of different age levels.
Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers.
Ability to:
Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
Ability to work with students one-on-one and in small groups.
Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Must be enrolled in or have completed a college program from an accredited college or university with a 3.5 or higher GPA.
Experience:
Past tutoring experience is desirable.
Major or minor in Education or a Teaching Credential program is desirable.
Bilingual English/Spanish. is desirable.
