Under general direction, coordinates the operations of year-round recreational programs and cultural arts activities at an assigned recreational center; performs related duties as required.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
Schedules, organizes, coordinates and implements youth and adult recreational programs, cultural activities, workshops and special events; prepares schedule of events and secures necessary personnel, equipment and materials for program activities.
Monitors and supervises recreation program participants; maintains established guidelines for effective and safe programs.
Assists in assessment of community needs and recommends improvements to current community services, programs and events; may provide input to department budget.
Provides work direction to part-time staff and volunteers; recruits, trains and evaluates staff and volunteers.
Meets with a variety of community groups, governmental and private agencies to obtain services, programs and support; communicates plans, policies and procedures to various groups and the general public; resolves patron problems according to established guidelines.
Prepares publicity releases, reports, brochures and general promotions of programs.
Purchases program supplies and equipment, and is responsible for inventory control.
Prepares and maintains a variety of records including attendance, registration, incidents and equipment use records; conducts research on a variety of recreation related issues and prepares written and oral reports.
Opens and closes facilities; schedules and prepares facilities and recreation areas for use; performs routine custodial work as needed.
May collect fees and register patrons for programs and activities.
Administers first aid and CPR, as needed.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. A typical way of obtaining the knowledge and abilities would be completion of two years of college with courses in physical education, recreation, social services, gerontology or related field and three years of experience in recreation work. Possession of an American Red Cross First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate are required. Possession of or ability to obtain a California Class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record is required. English/Spanish bilingual skills are highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of: theories, principles and practices of recreation and leisure programs; techniques and methods of planning and organizing group activities; skills and equipment used in popular sports, crafts and games; rules and regulations of sports activities; public relations and marketing techniques; principles and practices of customer service and public contact; principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation; first aid methods and safety practices related to recreational program planning and evaluation.
Ability to: schedule, organize and implement recreation programs with groups and individuals of all ages; enlist the interest and participation of children and adults in a variety of recreation programs; analyze, interpret and explain department policies and procedures; conduct research and prepare and present reports; maintain accurate records; work independently with little direction; plan and organize work to meet deadlines; exercise sound judgment; deal constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions; supervise assigned staff; meet the public in situations requiring diplomacy and tact; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working
relationships.

An incumbent appointed to this position is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program. The Pull Notice program provides information on the incumbent's driving record and Driver's License status on a periodic basis to the City of South Gate. An employee assigned a City vehicle must acknowledge receipt and understanding of City Administrative Regulations covering the use of City vehicles.
