DEFINITION

Under immediate supervision, assists teachers and other certificated personnel in a variety of instructional and non-in­structional activities; reads, writes and converses in English and another designated language (Mandarin).

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class are established primarily to supplement the instructional program by performing selected instructional tasks and routine non-instructional activities in assignments with limited or non-English speaking students. Depending upon the assign­ment, incumbents may be required to translate in instructional situations and in parent conferences from English to the designated language.
 
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

  • Proof of high school graduation, GED or higher.  An uploaded photo of the diploma / degree or transcripts (official or unofficial) certifying graduation date or conferred degree is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS

Experience:
Recent paid or volunteer experience involving organized activities with children.
 
Education: 
Graduation from high school or equivalent GED or demonstrated proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics skills up to or exceeding that required for local high school seniors pursuant to Education Code 51220 (a) and (f).
 
          
Special License or Language Skills:

Possession of current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid certificates from approved training program or must obtain current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid certificates from approved training program within sixty (60) calendar days from date of hire. Failure to do so, shall result in termination of employment. The ability to read, write and converse in English and Mandarin is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities of this class include but are not limited to: 
  • Reads, writes and converses in English and another designated language (Mandarin)
  • Serves as verbal interpreter in meetings with students and parents
  • Translates in English and in the desig­nated foreign language instructional materials, correspondence and other written materi­als
  • Interprets, translates and clarifies information and materials for students in order to facilitate understanding and learning
  • Provides reinforcement experience for students in reading, mathematics, language arts and other subject areas according to instructions from certificated personnel
  • Assists students requiring individual help
  • Administers, proctors and scores tests including the recording of results
  • Assists teacher(s) in supervising stu­dents
  • Assists in maintaining an orderly learning environment
  • Prepares material for classroom use
  • Sets up and dismantles learning apparatus
  • Operates audio-visual equip­ment and other learning apparatus
  • May perform classroom related clerical activities
  • Per­forms other related duties as required

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees in this classification work primarily indoors, in direct contact with students, the public and other District staff.

APPOINTMENT

Employees who receive a regular appointment to the class must serve a probationary period of one hundred and thirty (130) days of paid service. During this period, an employee must demonstrate an overall satisfactory level of performance; failure to do so shall result in the employee's termination without right of appeal to the Human Resources Department.
 

VACANCY 
This is a 9 month position, 5 days a week, 5 hours per day.

Pay is based on actual hours worked. 
Starting salary is $15.00/hour.
