Receives instruction and training, and gains experience in the following activities:
Processes a variety of law enforcement reports; reviews reports for complete and accurate information and resolves errors or obtains missing information from responsible Deputy Sheriff; researches and compiles necessary background information on persons or property named in reports such as arrest and driver's records, wants or outstanding warrants, stolen or recovered property, etc., for use in further investigations; indexes and/or scans reports into station files and appropriate computerized law enforcement data systems.
Prepares and assembles court documents to be filed in accordance with strict legal deadlines for arraignment hearings of arrested persons, ensuring that all required documents and information are complete and accurate as to form and in compliance with court and legal requirements.
Enters and retrieves online confidential law enforcement information, and sends messages over local, state and national computerized law enforcement data systems; ensures information is complete and accurate; selects appropriate information and system to use, and codes or decodes information, and composes messages in accordance with rules and regulations governing each data system.
Maintains confidential and semi-confidential alphabetic, numeric, and subject matter crime and criminal records and files; cross indexes files and/or documents; prepares case files ensuring all available and necessary documents and information are included; periodically purges files; performs exhaustive file searches for information not readily available.
Screens and routes telephone calls; furnishes information to the public and authorized law enforcement personnel over the telephone or at a counter in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures regarding release of confidential and non-confidential information.
Types memoranda, letters, and other documents from brief general instructions, as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Six months of office clerical experience involving typing or keyboard manipulation.
TYPEWRITING SKILL
Ability to type at the rate of 30 net words per minute.
LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class II – Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.
SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.
EXAMINATION CONTENT
This examination will consist of two (2) parts:
PART I
A computerized written test covering filing, checking for errors, vocabulary, spelling, reading comprehension, and written expression weighted 100%.
TRANSFER SCORES
Applicants that have taken any identical written test with the Sheriff's Department within the last 12 months will have their written test responses automatically transferred to this examination.
This examination may be used in the future for new examinations within the Sheriff's Department. Upon acceptance of your application, your test responses will be transferred to the new examination and you may not be allowed to retake any identical test for at least 12 months.
ONLY CANDIDATES WHO ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON PART I WILL PROCEED TO PART II.
PART II
A qualifying performance typing test of 30 net words per minutes will be administered to candidates who have NOT held a typing position in the service of the County of Los Angeles.
Applicants who do not pass their performance typing test will be allowed one additional opportunity. You must keep your scheduled appointment. Applicants who fail to appear for the additional scheduled performance typing test will not be allowed to reschedule for a make-up test, and the original score will be the final typing score.
The following candidates are NOT required to take the County typing performance test:
Candidates who, in the service of the County of Los Angeles, currently hold or have held a typing position that meets the minimum typing skill requirement of the subject examination.
Candidates who have taken and passed a Los Angeles County typing performance test administered by a County Department that meets the minimum typing skills requirement of the subject examination. Applicants MUST attach a copy of the typing certificate to their application.
Candidates who possess a Certificate of Typing Proficiency issued by the Department of Human Resources (DHR) or issued by an organization with an established partnership with DHR such as the Los Angeles Unified School District that meets the minimum typing skill requirement of the subject examination. Applicants must attach a copy of the typing certificate to their application.
CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.
THE WRITTEN AND PERFORMANCE TYPING TESTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.
TEST PREPARATION
Study guides and other test preparation resources are available to help candidates prepare for written employment tests. While the guides will help in preparing for the test, we advise you to review all related materials that you deem necessary.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
SPECIAL INFORMATION
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.
