Job Description

This recruitment will close on July 16, 2021 or when 100 applications are received,

Under the general supervision of the Public Safety Specialist, the Public Safety Assistant provides information and assistance to the public regarding City regulations and various law enforcement matters.  The Public Safety Assistant inputs calls for service on Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) terminals. Monitors activity on the Sheriff’s radio, surveillance cameras and incidents throughout the City.  Provides information to the public regarding the City Municipal Code, California Criminal and Vehicle codes. Performs general clerical duties in the Public Safety division.

Typical Duties Performed

(These examples do not include all the duties, which may be assigned; any one position may not include all the duties listed). 

  • Manages telephone and public counter requests for service, citizen complaints, and general inquiries.
  • Inputs calls for service on specialized Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) terminals.
  • Responsible for identifying the appropriate response to crimes reported and/or services requests; differentiating between routine, priority, and emergency requests, and initiating and following through on responses.  
  • Answers questions regarding programs and services and directs persons to facilities and events.
  • Provides general information regarding department policies, procedures, and regulations.  
  • Assists with crime prevention efforts and distributes crime prevention materials and resources.   
  • Monitors activity on the Sheriff’s radio, surveillance cameras and CAD regarding incidents throughout the City and notifies the Assistant City Manager, Service Area Sergeant and Public Safety Specialist of any pertinent information.
  • Operates computer terminals to enter, modify, and retrieve data. Searches files and obtains data pertaining to traffic accidents, crime reports, and citations issued. 
  • Conducts Live Scan fingerprints, completes citation corrections and vehicle releases, and issues garage sale permits.  
  • Performs a variety of specialized clerical tasks involving the development, maintenance, retention, and retrieval of Public Safety records and files.  
  • Sorts, files, copies, and distributes various department reports; writes routine reports.  
  • Adheres to City and departmental polices and procedures and performs other related, non-sworn duties as assigned.

The selected candidate in this position will be a non-sworn employee of the City of La Mirada and will not be a sworn officer with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Must be able to pass a background investigation for non-sworn personnel conducted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department prior to employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Background:  Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be able to prove eligibility to work in the United States; pass a written examination, background investigation including background questionnaire, DMV check, and fingerprinting for the disclosure of any criminal record. Must be able to pass a physical examination including a drug-screen test.
 
Knowledge of: Community oriented policing services; public relations and customer service practices; complaint resolution techniques; laws and regulations governing the release of information from law enforcement agency records; general laws, principles, codes, regulations, and laws governing law enforcement records management, organization, procedures, and operations of the department; enforcement functions, methods and procedures; office methods and procedures; and report writing.
 
Ability to:  Learn and correctly interpret and apply laws pertinent to vehicle codes and local ordinances; operate the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) terminal to input calls for service for dispatching; communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; follow oral and written instructions; comprehend and carry out public safety policies, procedures, and regulations; maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public, and work within a team-based system; exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact with the public and staff; exercise initiative and make sound decisions in accordance with established regulations; work independently, without immediate supervision; work a multiline phone system and manage multiple duties at once; present a clean, neat appearance appropriate to successful public contact; utilize quality customer service skills and techniques; and work varied shifts, including days, nights, weekends and holidays.
 
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

Experience:  Two years of experience working for a public safety agency performing law enforcement related services and support duties.  Dispatch experience with a law enforcement agency and general clerical experience is desired.

Education:   Graduation from high school or the equivalent.  Completion of 60 units of college coursework in Criminal Justice or a related field is desirable.  P.O.S.T. Dispatch and 832 P.O.S.T. training and computer experience is highly desirable.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE: 
Possession of a valid California Driver License without suspensions prior to and throughout employment is required.
Possession of a valid CPR, AED and First Aid certificate is required within one month of employment.
