The City of Berkeley is currently accepting applications for one temporary (limited duration, not to exceed one year) Applications Programmer/Analyst I role.

 

The City of Berkeley is looking for someone with experience in the City of Berkeley and a keen interest in technology who can advance the successes of the City’s Information Technology Department and successfully anticipate and navigate future challenges. The Application Programmer Analyst I position is a hands-on role. The ideal candidate will have a wide breadth of experience in technology, possess strong interpersonal and organization skill, and the ability to work independently.

Required Qualifications

EDUCATION: A four-year college with major coursework in computer science, mathematics, business administration or a closely related field or equivalent experience.

 

Familiarity with business applications such as Work Orders, Fleet and Facilities, and Performance and Learning Management systems (LMS) and other public sector applications.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Familiarity with business processes and customer service in the City of Berkeley in areas of Public Works, Human Resources or Finance to work on adapting new software for these departments.
  • Be passionate for delivering technological solutions to business problems and have the ability to complete the tasks in timely manner to keep the projects on budget and within timelines. 
  • Have ability to remain flexible in seeing the big picture while maintaining a detailed oriented view when needed.
  • Be able to communicate with client departments, understand business requirements and train users to write user acceptance test cases. 
  • Be able to identify risks / issues and escalate to appropriate channels when conflicting deadlines arise.  
  • Be a quick learner who strives on managing competing priorities and deadlines.

The examination process will consist of:
  1. Review of applications for minimum qualifications for the position and to ensure all materials have been submitted.
  2. Applicants meeting the minimum requirements will undergo an evaluation of their education, training, and experience to determine the best qualified applicants.

Applicants meeting the minimum qualification and have complete application materials will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring department(s) will use to conduct final selection interviews.  Hiring Department(s) will contact applicants directly if selected to participate in their hiring/selection process.

Candidates under final consideration for employment with the City should expect to undergo an employment background / reference check that may include, but is not limited to: employment history, confirmation of educational credentials and degrees, licenses including driver’s license, registrations, certificates, and other credentials as part of the appointment process. Some positions, depending on the nature of the work, also require a credit check and a review of  Summary Criminal History obtained from the State Department of Justice through Live Scan Fingerprinting.
