The Long Beach Police Department is the second largest municipal police agency in Los Angeles County and provides law enforcement services to the 7th largest city in the State of California. With over 800 sworn officers and a total staffing of over 1,200 personnel, LBPD is dedicated to professional, proactive and innovative policing and is committed to building and maintaining positive relationships with the diverse community they serve. With an annual operating budget of over $211 million, the Police Department also provides contracted law enforcement services to the Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Airport, Long Beach Transit, and Long Beach City College. THE DIVISION
Under the Office of the Assistant Chief of Police, the Office of Constitutional Policing, was created to rethink traditional policing in a manner that will help implement equity, justice, and constitutional public safety to our entire community. This office supports the Department’s goals of policing within the parameters set by the U.S. Constitution, the California State Constitution, and the City Charter while protecting the rights of all people. It guides our Department towards building greater trust and strengthening relationships through increased responsiveness, transparency, and accountability while increasing public safety.
THE POSITION
The Long Beach Police Department is seeking a professional, self-motivated Administrative Intern. This position is responsible for clerical duties within the Office of Constitutional Policing and will report to the Professional Standards Administrator.
The selected candidate will be placed into the City's Administrative Intern Non-Career position. Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Coordinate meetings take notes and prepare meeting summaries for the Professional Standards Administrator
Screen telephone calls respond to emails, and provide answers to inquiries
Assist with data analysis projects
Maintain confidential reports and files
Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE
Applicants must be current college students or recent college graduates who have completed their degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Law, Business Administration, Communications, Public Policy, Criminal Justice, or related field.
Proficiency in the use of computers, including email, internet, and office productivity software.
Willingness to work weekends, holidays and shift work as necessary.
Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in positions requiring confidentiality and involving administrative processes.
Actively considering or pursuing a career in City government
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and ensure timely completion
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite computer programs (Word, Excel, Access, SharePoint, Teams and PowerPoint) and the Intranet/Internet with a willingness to learn new programs
Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
A valid driver's license and a current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at time of selection interview.
