Under the general supervision of the Public Works Operations Supervisor, to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled street lighting, traffic and pedestrian signal maintenance, repair and installation work; to perform a variety of work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment; and to do related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Performs a variety of semi-skilled and journey level electrical work; installs and maintains street lighting, traffic and pedestrian signals; inspects, repairs, services and maintains electrical and lighting systems, including conduit and duct systems, light and power circuits, motor appliances, generators, breaker panels, fans, heaters, fixtures and clocks; maintains and repairs heating and air conditioning equipment; installs necessary interior wiring for equipment and appliances; wires new and altered buildings; follows a plan of preventive maintenance, inspection and repair; performs troubleshooting work to locate defects in electrical systems; replaces fuses, cords and sockets; installs, tests and maintains intercommunication systems; interprets electrical plans and specifications and checks for conformity with codes, regulations and safety orders.

Qualifications

Knowledge of standard practices, tools, materials and equipment of electrical, air conditioning and heating trades; design, constructions, installation and maintenance of electrical, heating, air conditioning and lighting equipment; electrical codes and related ordinances and regulations; electric motors and control systems; safe work practices; basic record keeping practices; and ability to perform skilled, journey level work in the electrical trades; use electrical tools and equipment skillfully and safely; read and follow electrical plans and specifications; diagnose causes of electrical failure; assist in carrying out a city-wide preventive maintenance program; repair electrical, traffic signal, lighting, control and alarm systems; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work from heights; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work; read and write at the level required for successful job performance.

Requirements

One year of responsible work experience in the maintenance, repair and installation of electrical equipment. Completion of college level courses in electronics and digital theory, principles and operations is desirable. 

Possession of an appropriate driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles is required.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Employees in this class are required to wear respirators regularly.  In accordance with CAL/OHSA regulations, employees are prohibited from having facial or head hair that impairs the effectiveness of respirator equipment.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential duties of the class as they relate to this requirement.

While performing the duties of this class, an employee is regularly required to use oral and written communications skills; read documents or instructions; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret data or information; use math and mathematical reasoning; learn and apply new information or skills; perform highly detailed work; work under changing, intensive deadlines with constant interruptions; perform multiple, concurrent tasks.

The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, and on slippery and uneven surfaces.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electric shock.

The work environment described here is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential function of this job.  Incumbent in this classification will work out in the field environment.

OTHER INFORMATION:
