Under direct supervision, performs a wide variety of typing and general clerical work of a routine nature; performs related duties as required. The current vacancy is in the City Clerk's department and will be assigned to passport processing.
Examples of Essential Functions
Receives the public and answers calls; determines how incoming calls should be routed; directs people to appropriate offices; answers routine questions; explains routine procedures, processes, or departmental activities; distributes and explains forms, such as applications or permits; obtains routine factual information to create or update files; provides routine assistance; compiles routine reports by extracting and/or tabulating information from a variety of sources, such as files, correspondence, meeting notes, logs, previous reports, and/or oral instruction; types a variety of documents in draft and final form, such as correspondence, standard forms, charts, and reports using word processing programs or equipment; types from written, recorded, or printed sources and/or oral instructions; proofreads materials for correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation; may keep petty cash; may sort and distribute mail; performs related duties as required.
Minimum & Desirable Qualifications
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Example combinations include graduation from high school or equivalent, and two years of experience in related clerical work, involving a variety of typing and/or office operation responsibilities; including or supplemented by training in the clerical occupational field. Bilingual Spanish is highly desirable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Working knowledge of related office methods and procedures; office equipment operation. Skill in the operation of a variety of office equipment and computer programs.
DESIRABLE Experience in processing passports.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record may be required for some assignments. Ability to communicate in Spanish is highly desirable. A TYPING CERTIFICATE WILL BE REQUIRED with a minimum of 45 wpm.

Initial appointment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a City paid physical examination, drug screening, background check and verification of U.S. Citizenship or right to work in the United States. This position is subject to and dependent on the continued availability of funds and the manpower needs of the City of Bell Gardens. The successful candidate will be required to satisfactorily complete a probationary period before being promoted to "regular" status.
