Created in 1993, LAHSA is a joint powers authority of the city and county of Los Angeles.  As the lead agency in the HUD-funded Los Angeles Continuum of Care, we coordinate and manage over $300 million annually in federal, state, county, and city funds for programs providing shelter, housing, and services to people experiencing homelessness.  

Under the supervision of the HMIS Training and Support Supervisor, the HMIS Data Specialist will serve as a technical resource for verification and reporting of outcomes and quality data. The position will rotate among the homeless service providers for the Coordinated Entry System for Families.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide direct, field-based technical assistance to Family Solutions Centers and 
  • crisis housing providers as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance to providers to aid in their use of HMIS to enhance programmatic management and outcomes data collection.
  • Identify data integrity or data collection challenges and assist or escalate as appropriate to develop solutions to those challenges.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams to address data issues.
  • Runs reports on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis to ensure data quality, accuracy, and substance of reports.
  • Conduct HMIS refresher trainings.
  • Maintain technical knowledge by attending educational and informational webinars from vendor, HUD, and others as it relates to HMIS. 
  • Create and maintain an ongoing relationship with program staff at agencies.
  • Work with the CES for Families team to standardize paperwork and develop procedures when new resources are added.
  • Maintains customer confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Los Angeles CoC HMIS and data requirements.
  • Excellent people skills, specifically a capacity for collaboration and interpersonal relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to express technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple work assignments.
  • Ability to present technical concepts and data reports to external homeless service provider staff.
  • Expert problem solving, prioritization, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite.

Training & Experience

  • A high school degree is mandatory; vocational training and/or certificate is strongly preferred.
  • Any combination of extensive and applicable work experience and educational credentials to perform the above duties successfully. 
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
