The Long Beach Water Department is a Commission-governed department of the City of Long Beach, consisting of over 250 employees and operating with an annual budget of approximately $160 million. The Department is currently seeking candidates to fill a Civil Engineering Assistant – Non Career vacancy in the Treatment Plant Division.
Non-Career positions are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours over a 12-month period. Non-Career employees are considered temporary, at-will, and are not typically eligible for benefits; however, the selected candidates will qualify for health insurance and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Assisting with analyzing operational data to interpret trends, investigate operational incidents, and recommend operational improvements
Assisting in the oversight of regulatory compliance programs by interpreting rules and regulations, collecting data, preparing reports, and monitoring the compliance schedule
Assisting with the development of a comprehensive training plan for operations of all facilities
Assisting with the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for operations of all facilities
Assisting with organization and digitization of historical plant and facility records
Conducting bench and pilot-scale optimization studies, researching, and implementing new technologies to optimize operation
Preparing maps and figures using ArcGIS, Microsoft Office applications, and related programs
Collecting and digitalizing plant asset records for integration into a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
Assisting with ongoing capital improvement program (CIP) projects, preparing specifications, soliciting quotes, issuing RFPs, RFQs, conducting proposal and bid analysis; coordinating with other bureaus
Performing other related duties as assigned to support the operations group
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree (preferred) from an accredited college or university in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field (proof required)*, OR
Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate recognized by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers (proof required)*
Desirable Qualifications:
Related work experience
Interest in water treatment, water quality, and water systems
Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
Experience with MS Office applications (ex., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Able to work independently under minimal supervision
