Under general supervision, the position of Librarian I performs complex library work, may manage the activities of a unit of library services, and performs a wide range of professional services, including, but not limited to: reference and reading guidance for adults; materials selection; program planning and presentation; community outreach.
This current vacancy is for Youth Services. The Youth Services position primarily focuses on services and materials for children ages 7-12 but collaborates as a member of both the children's and teen departments. Youth Services performs a wide range of professional librarian work including, but not limited to: reference and reading guidance for children; age-appropriate print and electronic materials selection; age appropriate program planning and presentations; technology assistance and troubleshooting; and community outreach.
Alhambra Public Library employees are not subject to the civil service provisions of the Alhambra Municipal Code.
Essential Job Functions
Current assignment; Under direction of a Librarian II, offers specialized professional assistance to patrons at public service desks; answers factual ready reference questions as well as in-depth research requests; assists patrons in the effective use of library materials and equipment; participates in collection development including maintenance of assigned subject area. In addition to the above primary responsibilities, librarian shares with other reference librarians specifically assigned duties such as preparation of subject bibliographies, publics relations brochures, maintenance of reference files and indexes. Cross training in all public service areas will be required.
Qualification Guidelines
Required: A Master's Degree in Librarianship. High public service motivation and ability to effectively perform multiple tasks under pressure.
Desired: Experience in public library environment with an emphasis in youth services collection management and programming, and experience working with reference materials and providing reader's advisory. Bilingual (reading, speaking, and/or writing) in Chinese, Vietnamese, or Spanish.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.
Selection Process:
Applicants must complete an application online prior to the final filing date. Applications will be screened for qualifications appropriate background and only the most qualified will be invited to participate in the examination process. Successful candidates must achieve a minimum passing score in each of the test components. Applicants will be notified by email as to the test date, time and location. The examination process will include an oral interview weighted at 100%.
Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment physical and may be required to pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination as a part of the selection process. Candidates who do not pass will be disqualified and removed from the eligibility list.
