The Transportation Planning Division in the Planning and Environmental Affairs Bureau in the Port of Long Beach has four primary functions: 1) conducting multi-modal transportation and goods movement studies; 2) developing and overseeing portwide traffic management programs and initiatives; 3) pursuing grant funds to support transportation programs and ensuring timely use of funds; 4) and developing and analyzing transportation related policies, legislation and initiatives.

The Transportation Planning Division is seeking an Administrative Intern to perform routine, yet critical tasks related to the planning, development, and funding of the Port's transportation systems.

This is an unclassified (Non-Civil Service) position. Non-career positions typically average 29 hours per week, up to a total of 1040 hours in a year for a maximum of two years.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under supervision, the Administrative Intern will:
  • Maintain and update the Port's traffic count database
  • Assist in data management and analysis, data visualization, and GIS applications
  • Assist the planning of roadway, bicycle and rail facilities within the Port
  • Assist in the review and preparation of transportation studies for environmental documents
  • Conduct complex analysis and provide input in the transportation section of environmental documents
  • Conduct or review transportation analyses prepared by consultants for Port facilities, rail, highway, bicycle and other transportation related projects
  • Support and assist the development of traffic management programs and initiatives
  • Assist with addressing regulations, guidance, and protocols under the California Environmental and Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
  • Assist in the review/analysis of regional transportation studies/issues pertaining to outside agencies, such as City of Long Beach, Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA), California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and United States Department of Transportation (USDOT)
  • Conduct or assist in the review/analysis of transportation issues
  • Support grant management and development of funding strategies
  • Perform other related duties as required

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university at the graduate level OR a recent graduate in the following disciplines listed with plans to enter a graduate program. A major in Transportation Planning/Engineering or Urban and Regional Planning/Policies or closely related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of transportation engineering/planning principles and methodologies
  • Experience reviewing and preparing traffic impact analysis and environmental documents is preferred.
  • Familiarity with trends in big data applications is desirable.
  • Knowledge of the Port industry is a plus
  • Valid California Driver's License in good standing is required prior to appointment
