ABOUT THE POSITION

Under general supervision, performs a variety of clerical and technical accounting support duties as assigned in the Finance Department.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintain and reconcile a variety of ledgers, reports, and account records; examine and correct accounting transactions to ensure accuracy; prepare journal entries; assist accountant with month-end closing procedure and bank reconciliation; prepare correspondence for returned checks or ACH return due to insufficient funds; process and handle write-offs on various accounts; process and monitor payment cancelation on City checks, verify check status; process purchase orders and invoices as assigned and verify purchase orders with invoices; research invoice discrepancies; assist in processing payroll and payroll related payments; provide clerical support to as needed; and, perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education, training, and experience that would likely provide the required skills, knowledge, and abilities is qualifying. A desired combination is as follows:

Education: Completion of High School or equivalent, supplemented by recent college level coursework in accounting.  An Associate's degree is desired.

Experience: Equivalent to one full-time year performing responsible clerical and general accounting support duties, including maintenance of financial and accounting records. Recent experience working in a municipal accounting environment is desired.

Knowledge of: Fundamental principles, practices, and procedures of fiscal record keeping, accounts receivable, accounts payable, purchase order, payroll; standard office procedures and methods; modern office equipment, including computer aptitude and basic proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Excel and Word.

Ability to: Tabulate, record, and balance transactions; prepare a variety of financial and statistical reports; make sound decisions; operate a personal computer using Microsoft Word and Excel with basic proficiency; work independently with minimal supervision; and communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing; and, keyboard at keyboard at an acceptable rate.

Desirable Qualifications: Experience in payroll processing as well as an understanding of employment and payroll regulations.  Ability to speak Spanish.   

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

License: A valid California Class C Driver's License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions may be required.

Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions: The duties and responsibilities of this position are performed in an office environment and involve sitting, standing, and walking for prolonged or intermittent periods of time, and include reaching, bending, and twisting at the waist to perform desk work and operate general office equipment including a personal computer with keyboard for prolonged or intermittent periods of time. The operation of a personal computer requires finger and wrist dexterity and the ability to withstand exposure to vibration, pitch, and glare from the computer.  An incumbent must be able to safely lift and carry books weighting up to 25 pounds, including lifting from counter tops or file drawers.

Candidate(s) who complete selection testing with acceptable results will qualify for name placement on an Eligible List. Prior to a conditional offer of employment, a comprehensive background check will be conducted, including fingerprinting. Upon issuance of a conditional offer of employment, a job-related pre-placement medical exam to determine the candidate's physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position will be required and will include a drug screen.
