The City of Santa Fe Springs seeks applicants for the position of Heritage Park Ranger. This is a part-time, non-benefited, at-will position. Applicants must be available to work approximately 20 -25 hours per week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

The Heritage Park Rangers are required to wear a City-provided uniform and must be able to work sixteen (16) hour shifts and/or work over night shifts for special event preparation or park security.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

Under direct supervision, Heritage Park Rangers are responsible for the security of the park grounds and buildings both at Heritage Park and Clarke Estate. Essential duties include but not limited to: patrol grounds and adjacent sites by foot and by bicycle; gives information and directions to the public; and participates in crowd control during public and private events; prepares and assists in the preparation of incident and accident reports; takes photographs at scene of crime or accident; assists in preserving the evidence of accidents and/or incidents at the park; assist the public in understanding historical exhibits; feed birds and maintain Aviary; speak to large groups; inspect the park and the Estate and report unsafe conditions and equipment to supervisor; assist with supervision and enforcement of park & Estate rules and operational policies; oversee permit activities and special events; set-up equipment and take down of permit activities and special events; perform light maintenance work and other duties assigned.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications or a combination of qualifications that provide equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities:

Knowledge of:
Park rules and operation policies; and basic first aid and CPR procedures.

Ability to:
communicate with a wide variety of individuals with diverse ages and ethnic backgrounds; Checks for hazards or potential hazards to provide for the safety of the public and fellow employees; enforce park rules and operation policies; follow written and oral instructions; maintain records and prepare reports; work independently in the absence of supervision; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; effectively organize and prioritize assigned work; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; control uncooperative individuals; utilize correct English, grammar, and syntax when conveying information; remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places; make accurate observations; make sound judgments and take quick actions in emergencies; operate a variety of motor vehicles; demonstrate physical agility.
 
EDUCATION: 
 

  • High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California. Some college course work is desirable.
AGE:
  • Must be at least age 18.
 
EXPERIENCE:
  • A minimum of one year experience interacting with the public. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a wide variety of individuals with diverse ages and ethnic backgrounds.
 
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
  • A valid California Driver's License and an acceptable driving record is required at time of appointment, and must be maintained while employed with the City
  • Must possess of or the ability to obtain a First Aid and CPR certification within first three (3) months of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 
Ability to perform various tasks for extended periods of time: Sit, stand, walk, squat, stoop, kneel, and bend; push, pull, and reach overhead and above shoulders; lift and move up to 25 pounds.

EXAMINATION & SELECTION: 
The selection process may include an application review, written/performance examination, evaluation during a structured interview and other processes designed to predict successful job performance in this classification. Appointment will be contingent upon the successful completion of reference checks, a pre-employment physical which includes a drug screen and weight lifting exercise, a criminal records check, and documentation of the right to work in the United States.
