OCSD is currently looking to fill the role of Maintenance Worker – Collections.
 
Under close supervision, the Maintenance Worker performs a variety of routine maintenance duties in support of the Orange County Sanitation District's sewer system; operates and maintains a variety of tools and equipment; and performs preventive and corrective maintenance duties. Personnel at this level receive on the job training with close supervision while performing duties. Personnel subsequently learn and perform the following duties: maintain pump stations; clean sewer lines, manholes and wet wells; and setting up gas detectors to test present gas levels before entering confined spaces. Personnel will perform strenuous physical labor to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain equipment.  The candidate will be responsible for conducting traffic control when working in high traffic areas, will drive District vehicles including towing trailers; and will be assigned to respond to a variety of wastewater emergencies on an assigned standby shift.

Qualifications & Requirements

The successful candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent. One year of maintenance, construction, or repair experience is a plus. The ability to perform strenuous physical labor and effectively communicate verbally and in writing is required. This position will require the ability to perform standby duties and emergency response; and may require working overtime, and on occasion, on holidays and weekends. Possession of a valid California class C driver's license is required. Candidate is required to acquire a valid California class B driver's license with air brakes and tanker certificate within six months from the time of appointment.

The ideal candidate for this position should be a good communicator and able to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment.  The ability to interpret drawings, maintenance data and Material Safety Data Sheets, and to adhere to safety policies is highly desired.  A collection system maintenance certification from the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) is a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
 
Must possess mobility to work in the field and in and around a wide variety of District facilities; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various District sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing a minimum of 40 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
 
Environmental Elements
 
Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS
All Orange County Sanitation District employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the Orange County Sanitation District requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
