The Position

Under general supervision, performs sub-professional library work in the library; provides technical staff assistance to the section librarian; performs related duties as required.

The IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidate will have the experience and skills to:

  • assist or conduct family and children's programs such as storytimes
  • provide excellent customer service at the Information desk
  • assist patrons of all ages in locating and choosing appropriate materials
  • assist library patrons with computer-related questions in the library's Technology Center.

THE LIBRARY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
In 2013, the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library was awarded the prestigious National Medal, the nation's highest honor that can be bestowed on a museum or library by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, in recognition of the service, enrichment and experiences the Library brings to the community.  The Library strives to inform and enrich our community by providing access to traditional and technologically-innovative resources. We support and encourage education and the love of reading in a welcoming atmosphere with a knowledgeable, service-oriented staff. The department has two full-service facilities, a bookmobile and a "virtual" branch and employs a staff of approximately 90 full-time and part-time employees. This staff is spread among divisions that include Library Administration, Reference, Children's, Circulation, Outreach, Literacy and Technology services.

Examples of Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by employees in this class. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below.  Marginal duties (shown in italics) are those that are least likely to be essential functions for any single position in this class.

Receives library patrons; researches and answers questions and assists patrons in the use of library facilities and resources; answers reference questions, referring the most difficult or unusual to a librarian.
 
Plans and conducts programs such as children's programs and assists in publicizing library programs; develops and creates a variety of visual aids and displays.
 
Locates and recommends books, tapes, periodicals and special articles using index and catalog guides.
 
Schedules and assists in the supervision and assignment of library clerks, pages and volunteers; directs the receipt, sorting and shelving of books and materials.
 
Performs a wide variety of clerical library duties.
 

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in Library Science, six units of college level technical library courses, one year of library experience or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of library work; the use of library indexes, catalogs, and simple reference sources. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the public, especially children.

  • Provide proof of a valid California driver's license and be insurable; and
  • Pass a reference and background verification. References will not be contacted until a mutual interest has been established.
