The Anaheim Police Department is seeking a motivated individual for the position of Corrections Officer. This position requires employees to perform tasks relative to the custody, processing, housing, and feeding of City Detention Facility arrestees.


Essential Functions

  • Receives arrestees; conducts searches; inventories property; obtains critical health and mental information from arrestees; completes paper and computer bookings and all other related paperwork. 
  • Tag, seal, and secure inmate personal property. 
  • Fingerprint and photograph inmates using the Automated Fingerprint System. 
  • Assist inmates in completing their phone calls and house inmates according to proper classification in the housing area of the Detention Facility. 
  • Release inmates and their personal property when appropriate and in accordance with laws and regulations. 
  • Assist the Bailiff in processing inmates during the video arraignment court process. 
  • Conduct security checks of the Detention Facility both physically and via closed circuit television. 
  • Supervise Inmate Workers engaged in cleaning facility, preparing/serving food and during any activities outside the Detention Facility.
  • Transport arrestees to and from hospital services, other jail facilities, and other required transportation and field duties as directed. 
  • Engage in training as required. 
  • May be assigned supervisory duties in the absence of a Corrections Supervisor.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in personal protection methods desirable, and equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Additional coursework or training in criminal justice or related field desirable.
  • Knowledge of physical restraint and management techniques of combative, volatile, hostile and assaultive offenders; detention facility laws and codes; record keeping procedures, report writing, and basic computer usage.
  • The ability to successfully complete California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) and California Standards and Training for Corrections (S.T.C) requirements, and departmental standards for the position; read and write at an appropriate level; communicate verbally and in writing; think and speak logically; understand complex reports and training materials; demonstrate firearms proficiency; act quickly and accurately in emergency situations; deal effectively with cultural and social conflict; demonstrate leadership skills; demonstrate sound observation skills; confront and solve problems; demonstrate interpersonal sensitivity; and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain a valid Class C California Driver's License by date of appointment.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age at the time of application, and a minimum of 21 years of age upon appointment as a peace officer.
  • ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: As defined under Penal Code Sections 831.6, 830.6, and 832, this is a peace officer status position. Employees will participate in numerous training programs and must have the ability to successfully complete a Standards and Training for Corrections (S.T.C) Correctional Academy and a California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) approved Level III Reserve Police Officer Academy, which are conducted in full stress environments. Employees must also successfully complete the facility training officer program. The Correctional Academy, Reserve Academy and the facility training officer program must be successfully completed within the one-year probationary period.
  • NOTE: The City of Anaheim Detention Facility is a 24/7 operation and employees will be required to work a variety of shifts including, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as assigned.

Mandatory Orientation & Written Exam: The City of Anaheim utilizes the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) entry-level Adult Corrections Officer selection examination. The written exam is scheduled for Friday, July 27, 2018 at the Anaheim Police Department.

Physical Agility Test, Oral Interview & Pre-Background Screening: Candidates who achieve a passing score on the written exam will be invited to the physical agility test which is scheduled for Saturday, August 11, 2018. This testing process will allow applicants to participate in the physical agility test, and oral interview. Successful candidates will be interviewed by a background investigator after the oral interview.

Further selection steps include, but are not limited to a background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, a medical examination, which includes drug/alcohol screening, and an interview with the Chief of Police. The interview with the background investigator and completion of the background investigation will include, but is not limited to, verification and evaluation of any present and/or past use of drugs, driving and employment history.

Please review the following common disqualifiers. If any items listed pertain to you, you will be automatically disqualified in the background investigation. You may, at this time, want to screen yourself and withdraw prior to starting the recruitment process.
  • Any illegal use, sales, or possession of a drug classified as an opiate (heroin, opium, etc.) or PCP.
  • Any use of cocaine, methamphetamine, hallucinogens (GHB, MDMA/ecstasy, ketamine, etc.) within five years of date of application.
  • Any illegal use of anabolic steroids within three years of date of application.
  • A pattern or history of irresponsibility as evidenced by debt collections, civil judgments, failure to pay, late payments, etc.
  • Two or more at-fault traffic collisions within three years of the date of application.
  • Conviction of a hit-and run offense.
  • Any driver's license suspension within five years of date of application.
  • Conviction of a felony crime.
  • Conviction of any misdemeanor crime within five years of application.
  • Any conviction as an adult, of any misdemeanor crime involving domestic violence, sexual-related offenses or crimes against children.
  • Any conviction as an adult, of a theft or larceny crime.
The following may result in disqualification:
  • Use of cocaine, methamphetamine, hallucinogens (GHB, MDMA/ecstasy, ketamine, etc.) previous to five years of application.
  • Prior marijuana use.
  • Prior nitrous oxide use.
  • Illegal use of anabolic steroids previous to three years of application.
  • Illegal use of a hypodermic needle/ syringe.
  • A bankruptcy within the past three years of date of application.
  • More than one moving violation in the past 12 months, and/or three or more moving citations within the past three years, and/or five or more moving citations within the past five years of date of application.
