Los Angeles Superior Court seeks dynamic, well-qualified, and highly-motivated individuals to work as a Probate Examiner.

Los Angeles Superior Court is the largest unified trial court in the United States with nearly 600 courtrooms presided over by 550 bench officers and 4,500 full-time employees. The Court has 40 Court locations, serving 88 cities, and 118 law enforcement agencies countywide.

Probate Examiners perform diverse, complex and specialized probate assignments requiring the use of advanced specialized knowledge of probate policies, practices and procedures; reviews and processes complex probate documents, ensuring their completeness and compliance with all applicable legal requirements; answers questions from other court staff, litigants, attorneys and the public regarding probate statutory requirements and legal processes and procedures.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

To qualify, you must meet one of the following minimum requirements at the time of filing:

Option I:  Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree -AND- two (2) years of experience with a court, public or private law office, public administrator, public guardian, public conservator, or private professional fiduciary.

Option II:  A paralegal certificate or associate of arts degree from an accredited college, university, or educational institution -AND- four (4) years of experience with a court, public or private law office, public administrator, public guardian, public conservator, or private professional fiduciary. 

Option III: A juris doctor degree from an accredited college, university, or educational institution approved by the American Bar Association or by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California -AND- six (6) months of experience with a court, public conservator, public or private law office, public guardian, public conservator, or private professional fiduciary.
 
 
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid California Class C Driver's License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will possess the following desirable qualifications:
  • Knowledge of law, current California Probate Code. Rules of Court, LASC Local Rules, and common practices/procedures relating to Probate, including decedents' estates, trusts, conservatorships, and guardianships.  
  • Knowledge of the use and operations of case management systems.
  • Knowledge of court processes and various areas of law affecting Probate Court proceedings, including Probate, Family, Mental Health, Welfare, Civil, Elder, and Tax law.
  • Ability to discuss routine legal issues with judicial officers, attorneys, the public, and administrative personnel.
  • Ability to analyze existing Probate statutes and apply the relevant legal requirements to Probate matters. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Judicial Officers, Court and County employees, members of the public, and those they come into contact with at work.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of Court documents, records and information.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

EXAMINATION INFORMATION:

Part I: Qualifying evaluation of education, training and experience based upon submitted application. 
 
Part II: Applicants with the highest qualifications, as determined by this evaluation process will be invited to participate in the examination process.

To receive credit, a legible copy of your certificate, diploma or transcript (unofficial acceptable) detailing the degree conferred and the name of the educational institution must be attached to your online application following the guidelines below.
