Bookkeeping internships are intended for qualified applicants seeking hands-on experience in business administration, accounting, and financeespecially related to nonprofits. Ideal candidates will have significant experience in business and finance, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and an interest in nonprofit work.
The Bookkeeping Intern will work closely with the Bookkeeper to track all finances and payments, and maintain the Bookkeeping database. Responsibilities may include: creating author royalty reports; checking and verifying source documents such as invoices, receipts, and computer printouts; reconciling and balancing all accounts; drawing up financial statements such as trial balances, income statements, and balance sheets; tracking and maintaining inventory and inventory records; maintaining internal control systems; managing accounts payable and accounts receivable; preparing checks, payments, and bank deposits; preparing and processing payroll; complying with relevant reporting requirements; assisting in calculating and preparing tax returns, budget preparation, audits, and generating 1099s; maintaining a complete filing system to support financial records; providing general Accounting support such as data entry, filing, scanning, and other administrative duties; and providing general office support and upkeep as needed.

This is an unpaid internship.
We only offer on-site internships. We do not offer remote internships.
Red Hen Press has served both local and national communities as Southern Californias largest nonprofit literary publisher for 20 years. Our mission is to discover and publish works of literary excellence, support diversity, and foster youth literacy.
-Strong knowledge of bookkeeping practices and generally accepted accounting principles and procedures
-Strong knowledge of data management and financial data analysis
-Working knowledge of relevant computer applications (Excel and ideally QuickBooks)
-Experience creating department/project budgets
-Previous experience with nonprofit accounting or finances (not required but strongly preferred)
-A completed or in-progress undergraduate degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or related field (at least 2 years completed by requested internship season)
-An ability to commit to a minimum of 16 hours per week for 46 months
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills
-Excellent research abilities and a meticulous attention to detail
-A self-starting attitude and ability to maintain deadlines, multi-task, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment without close supervision
-Strong ability to work both independently and collaboratively
-Computer literacy, especially with Microsoft Office and Windows 7 -Background in publishing (not required but preferred)
