THE CITY OF MONROVIA

THE CITY ORGANIZATION
Monrovia is a general-law city operating under the Council-Manager form of government.  The five-member City Council appoints the City Manager who is responsible for the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of the City organization.  The City Manager leads a full-time staff of 250 and a part-time staff of 100 employees while administering a Fiscal Year 2019-20 budget of $136 million.
 
Monrovia is a full-service municipality that coordinates its operations through seven departments: the City Manager's Office, Administrative Services Department, Public Works Department, Community Services Department, Community Development Department, Police Department and Fire Department.  Unique among California cities its size, Monrovia operates its own water system and library.
 
COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
The Community Services Division is responsible for the Recreation and Library operations, programs and services. Recreation services are centralized at the Monrovia Community Center, just north of the Library and adjacent to the Historic and lively Old Town District. Recreation is responsible for a range of services including: special events, youth programs and sports, senior programs, passports, facility rentals and the Hillside Wilderness Preserve.
 
The Community Services Department takes pride in setting high standards of excellence for their programs and community services for youth, adults, seniors, and families to promote healthy lifestyles and improve the quality of life. The department is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in the community by providing positive recreation and leisure opportunities for people of all ages.  This is achieved by encouraging citizen involvement and developing cultural harmony and it will be supported by commitment to building and maintaining community partnerships and by responding to community needs.
 
This is a uniquely exciting time as the Monrovia Public Library executes their 5-year Strategic Plan. The Monrovia Public Library offers incredible programming for all ages. Adults, teens, children, and even babies can participate in Library happenings on site, at schools, in the parks, and online. The Library facility is Silver LEEDS certified to be environmentally friendly and has space for everyone, including a large community room, a Monrovia Heritage room, a teen corner, a children's wing, computer access and quiet places to read or study throughout!
 
THE POSITION
The City of Monrovia is looking for a special individual to serve as its Library Aide (Part-Time).  The position will appeal to individuals who are inspired by the challenges and opportunities presented in working with an engaged and active community.  The Library Aide will report to the Library Supervisor.

This position is responsible for a variety of ongoing operational responsibilities and projects including, but not limited to:
 
  • Maintaining the condition of the library shelves, sorting and shelving books and library materials according to standard procedures and the library classification system
  • Performing routine tasks, including assisting staff with opening and closing procedures
  • Additional duties may include assisting staff with outreach or programming activities

Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, abilities, and skills is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the qualifications would be:
 

  • Education, training and/or experience that demonstrates ability and willingness to learn and perform routine clerical work in the Library
  • Some knowledge or experience with the Dewey Decimal System is highly desirable
