Position Information
This is an Open Competitive recruitment to create an eligibility list for current and future vacancies. Successful candidates are expected to work eight (8) hours a day, five (5) days a week, and twelve (12) months per school year.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general direction, develops and maintains the environmental aspects of the application databases that support the Information Technology Services Department's information management services, and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
An incumbent in this class works with database management systems software and tools to determine the most appropriate ways to organize, store, retrieve, and report the data required by the enterprise's application software systems. The Database Administrator reports to the Chief Information Technology Officer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Sets up computer databases.
2. Tests and coordinates modifications to the computer database systems.
3. Ensures acceptable performance of the database management system.
4. Add new users to access the database(s).
5. Designs and implements database security.
6. Ensures database integrity.
7. Establish and implements procedures for backing up and recovering databases.
8. Maintains appropriate documentation on all aspects of the database(s).
9. Designs and distributes reports created from querying data stored in District database(s).
10. Modifies and converts data from different sources into data format utilized by various departments within the District.
Other Duties:
1. Writes and maintains stable and expandable code for the District's databases.
2. Provides lead work directions to support staff.
3. Works effectively in a team environment.
4. Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
1. Microsoft SQL Database architecture, including hardware and physical layout (RAID disk controller and processor configurations).
2. Database development and administration processes.
3. Database monitoring and performance tuning.
4. Microsoft SQL tools and packages.
5. Best practices, and Database troubleshooting techniques.
6. Corruption detection, backup, and disaster recovery techniques and processes.
7. Configuring client server and web-based environments.
8. Database auditing techniques and optimization methods.
9. Database security design and management.
10. Web page display of queried data.
11. SQL query creation and implementation.
12. Advanced report development and data analysis skills.
Ability to:
1. Think logically.
2. Communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
3. Concentrate and pay close attention to details.
4. Understand in great technical depth, the computer platform on which the database(s) run.
5. Display database data on web pages created for that purpose.
Education, Training, and Experience:
1. Graduation from a four-year college or university, preferably with a major in computer or information science, or business data processing. Graduate level courses in computer or information science, operations research or database techniques are desirable.
2. Five years of experience in the design, development, modification, improvement, and implementation of relational database management systems that includes access methods, definition languages, and software in an installation utilizing third generation systems that support batch, database and real time applications.
Experience with physical and logical database design, data security, development of plans for the conversion of existing systems to database systems, database recovery and backup techniques, on-line data inquiry and updating, and optimum processing techniques also is required. Two years of this experience must have included using Microsoft, Oracle, DB2, SharePoint, .NET Framework, or Java.
Two years of the experience must have been in a supervisory or project leader capacity.
Experience with student information systems is highly desirable.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
1. A valid California Driver License and proof of auto insurance.
2. Incumbents in this classification may be required to travel.
