The Department
The Communication and Information Technology (CIT) Department is a dynamic technical computer organization that readily adapts to the needs of the City of Torrance. CIT administers and maintains the City's communications and computing network environment, software applications, network/hardware infrastructure, desktop computers, telephones (desktop and cellular), and mobile radio communications for Police, Fire and the entire City's wireless communication infrastructure. CIT is responsible for approximately 200+ different business applications and office automation software programs and is also responsible for ensuring the integrity and security of all data passing through or stored on our network.
 
The Position
The City of Torrance is seeking a driven Information Technology Specialist to join the Communications and Information Technology team. Under the direction of the Systems Analyst, the specialist provides server support, supports operating departments, and assists the helpdesk staff. In addition, the Information Technology Specialist installs and maintains computer systems, networks, and related equipment; conducts training and develops training materials; administers the City's network infrastructure and information systems, and performs related work as needed.

HOURS: 
This position requires flexibility as the Information Technology Specialist may be required to work other than regularly scheduled hours to perform system back-ups and to assist in resolving operational problems.

PREMIUM PAY:
Information Technology Specialist's receive 5% - 15% premium pay for Microsoft Certifications.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
 
Two years of technical experience performing a full range of computer support and networking activities including software and hardware installation, applications support, trouble-shooting, LAN administration, or in conducting training or preparing user documentation involving data processing systems or software currently in use by the City.


AND

Graduation from a recognized two-year college with an AA degree in computer science or a related field. 

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES:
Certification as a Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) is desirable
MCSE certification must be related to products and versions currently in use by the City.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the most successful candidate will possess:
  • Certification as a Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) in server infrastructure or equivalent;
  • Experience with Window Server & User Support;
  • Experience with VM Ware and Active Directory;
  • The ability to be self-directed, learn new technology and research best methods and solutions to problems;
  • Good oral and written communications skills; and
  • A team-oriented attitude and the ability to work well with others.

Only those candidates who best meet the City and Department's needs will be  invited to participate in the testing process, which will consist of the following components and tentative dates:
 
Performance Exam - 50%
 (Tentatively Scheduled for December 10, 2019) 
Oral Exam - 50% (Tentatively Scheduled for December 19, 2019)
