The Engineering Bureau consists of two distinct and interrelated groups: Design/Maintenance & Program Delivery. These two groups consist of 5 distinct divisions: Construction Management, Design, Maintenance, Program Management, and Project Controls. The Construction Management Division is responsible for managing construction and professional services contracts awarded by the Board of Harbor Commissioners, and managing the Port's Labor Compliance Program.

The Construction Management Division is seeking Administrative Interns to perform routine, non-professional engineering work.


This is an unclassified (Non-Civil Service) position. Non-career positions typically average 20 hours per week, up to 29 hours a week, for a total of 1040 hours in a year for a maximum of two years.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under supervision, the Administrative Intern:

• Collects, compiles and analyzes statistical and technical data related to Construction Management activities
• Works closely with the project team monitoring the quality, cost and scheduling of construction projects
• Prepares cost estimates from engineering plans for infrastructure improvements
• Provides technical assistance to Engineering staff
• Assists in minor construction inspection and assists with contractor invoice review
• Keeps supervisor informed regularly on status of work activities and issues
• Interacts closely with the Construction Management Division and with other divisions as required
• Corresponds and communicates with internal Port employees and consultants via email, phone and live meetings
• Maintains a positive relationship with internal Port divisions, contractors and consultants
• Other related duties as required

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

QUALIFICATIONS:

 • Be a college student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate. A major in Civil Engineering, Construction Management and/or related field is preferred
• Be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds and areas of technical expertise is required
• Be familiar with MS Office, including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and other related applications
• Possess strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well, as the ability to work independently
• Possess good oral and written skills, and an ability to effectively communicate ideas in a clear, concise, and professional manner
• Have a valid California Driver's License
