Approx. 25 to 28 hours per week Position is Hourly/Part-Time/At-Will
Performs responsible work in the Communications Division by researching, writing, and distributing public information materials relating to City services and programs through print, video, graphics, website, and social media.
Typical Duties Performed
(These examples do not include all the duties which may be assigned).
Assists in the promotion of the City's key projects, programs, and services.
Writes newsletter articles for the La Mirada Living publication, Business News, and the City's electronic newsletter.
Prepares and submits weekly press releases and serves as liaison to the press.
Writes speeches for elected officials for a variety of public presentations.
Prepares article content for the City's website and helps keep information current.
Creates presentations and helps create videos for social media.
Works with other City departments in the preparation, coordination, and distribution of informational material for publications.
Photographs City Council meeting presentations, City events, programs, and services.
Researches and analyzes technical and statistical data relative to departmental functions and programs and makes recommendations.
Responds to inquiries from the public over the phone, electronically, or through correspondence.
Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures; performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of: Public relations principles and techniques; excellent writing skills; organizational and interpersonal skills; Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and general understanding of municipal government operations.
Ability to: Plan, write, edit, and design municipal publications and information materials; research, analyze and make sound recommendations; communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; exercise good judgment, courtesy and tact with staff, public, media and other agencies; and utilize quality customer service skills and techniques.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or the equivalent, and advanced college level coursework in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field is required. One year of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field is preferred.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required.

Appointments are normally made at the first step of the salary range. Consideration and approval for a salary higher than the first step is done on a case by case basis.
