NATURE OF WORK (CLASS SUMMARY):
Under general direction performs diverse and technical graphic design work; plans, develops and coordinates graphic design services that communicate the services and resources of the City; operates duplication and printing equipment; performs related duties as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
The position is responsible for conceptualizing, developing and implementing graphical designs for customer. The incumbent will exercise creative ability and technical skill through the use of a variety of art and media in developing and implementing original ideas. Incumbents are required to use a wide variety of graphics design, desktop publishing and related software with skill. Incumbents work with the Graphic Designer and outside vendors to insure that their output meets specific technical requirements for final production. Incumbents are guided in their work by a framework of established procedures and have access to supervisor for guidance with matters that do not fit within the established procedures and protocols.
 

Essential Functions / Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

The following functions ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities.
  • Reviews each new or repeat job order that has been prescreened by supervisor or other staff;
  • On occasion meets with requestor to discuss desired results and related issues pertaining to publication to be produced;
  • Studies sample publications and other materials provided to understand the requirements of the project, including deadlines, and make note of ideas to implement;
  • Determines what graphics material to be used in the publication;
  • Makes a variety of adjustments to photos and other graphics to be used in the publication (such as brightness, contrast, size, texture, and editing out undesired material), using knowledge of computer and software;
  • Plans proposed layout of material, including issues such as margin size, photos to use from those provided, and space utilization;
  • Archives document files electronically for future retrieval;
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous activities as needed;
  • Efficiently using Illustrator and Photoshop;
  • Continually checking and updating social media, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat;
  • Creates and works with existing logos & designs; and
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Modern principles, techniques, practices, and production equipment/materials used in contemporary media design;
  • Principles, techniques, tools, and materials used in photography and composition;
  • Use of color;
  • Principles of copy layout;
  • Illustrative advertising techniques; and
  • Basic photography methods and techniques.
SKILLS IN:
  • Proofing and checking materials prior to printing.
ABILITY TO:
  • Coordinate department marketing material;
  • Developing ideas the requestor may not have considered;
  • Use personal computer graphic art applications;
  • Able to multi-task and handle numerous assignments from multiple people;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Sufficient education, training, and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:
 
Education:
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED).
Experience:
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience performing graphics work with at least one (1) year performing independent graphics production assignments.
Certificates & Licenses:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's license.

Additional Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. weights such as boxes of paper, exert moderate pushing, pulling and sitting for long periods of time must be free from color blindness. Must have good eyesight to check position, color and accuracy of proofs, copy and finished product; good arm, hand and finger dexterity involved in activities such as freehand drawing.
