The City of Garden Grove is currently accepting applications for Administrative Intern.
 
Are you currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or have recently graduated within the last year? Do you want to gain valuable paid experience but also require flexibility in your schedule? If yes, then consider joining the City of Garden Grove! The City's internship program is designed to attract, develop, and mentor innovative candidates interested in public service and gain perspective on working in a city government environment. Candidates will gain marketable work experience while making a contribution to the local community. This is a year-round internship opportunity.
 
Depending on the vacancy, an Intern can be placed in any department throughout the City. The City of Garden Grove has 9 departments, including: City Manager's Office, Community & Economic Development, Community Services, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Police, and Public Works.
 
We currently have two (2) part-time vacancies in the Engineering and Administration units of the Water Services Division within Public Works Department.  We anticipate creating an eligibility list from this recruitment that may be used to fill current and future vacancies. Apply now!

Example of Duties

Assist members of management and technical staff by performing a variety of specialized and routine administrative assignments;

Review and summarize publications and documents to gather data and perform preliminary research. Develop and produce informative materials on a variety of subjects;

Prepare written reports and minutes, and assist with the coordination of public meetings or presentations;

Respond to requests for information, in person and over the phone, and provide necessary customer service to members of our community, business organizations, and other City employees;

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Completion of an equivalent of two (2) years of college with major work in public administration, business administration, political science, social sciences, law, accounting, planning or a related field. Customer service experience dealing directly with the general public is highly desirable.

Undergraduate applicants must be currently enrolled in a four-year accredited college or university with Junior or Senior status, or have graduated within the last year. 

Graduate applicants must be either currently enrolled or have graduated from a graduate program within the last year. 

Candidates will be required to submit proof of current registration or recent college graduation.

Once employed, those currently enrolled at an accredited college must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or higher, to remain eligible for employment.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Basic principles and methods of public administration; basic research techniques; effective customer service techniques and principles; and effective verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook or other related email programs, statistical analysis and research methodology is highly desirable.

ABILITY TO:
Follow verbal and written instructions; make sound analyses and evaluations; perform research; compile and evaluate data; prepare clear and comprehensive, computer-generated reports and documents using MS Word and Excel; work cooperatively with others; and provide quality customer service.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process will consist of: 
1) A Writing Exercise
2) An Oral Interview Panel

The writing exercise and panel interview are both TENTATIVELY scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, 2019. Examination dates are subject to change.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Participation in the Internship Program does not automatically guarantee full-time employment.  Candidates must apply and compete for full-time employment.  Administrative Interns are not eligible for medical benefits, vacation pay or holiday pay.
 
Administrative Interns may work up to 1,000 hours per fiscal year and must be enrolled in college or be a recent graduate.  Those enrolled in college must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 to remain eligible for employment.  Administrative Interns may only remain in the program up to two (2) years after graduating from an accredited college.
