The Torrance City Manager is recruiting for a seasoned support staff who has a strong clerical background and exceptional administrative skills to help manage the daily office activities of the City Manager's Office, and work effectively with the City Management staff.

This position reports to the City Manager and is supervised by the Supervising Administrative Assistant.  Major responsibilities include coordinating communication, information, schedules and activities, and performs related work as required.  Must exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality of critical and sensitive information; work under pressure to meet multiple and simultaneous deadlines; have the ability to manage multiple projects; effectively interact with the public, and have excellent customer service skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Graduation from high school or equivalent and three (3) years of increasingly responsible clerical and customer service experience.

Specialized training in office skills and effective use of standard office software is highly desirable.

License and/or Certificates
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License and safe driving record may be required for assignment to some positions in the classification.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to operate office equipment and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Exercise sound judgment and integrity when handling confidential matters. 
  • Effectively handle multiple projects and constantly shifting priorities.
  • Possess a strong work ethic with good attendance and punctuality.

At time of application, candidates must also submit a keyboarding test certificate from a verifiable source such as one of the South Bay One-Stop Business and Career Centers dated within one (1) year of written exam date. This link http://www.southbay1stop.org/contact-us will provide you the locations which includes Torrance One-Stop, Gardena One-Stop, Carson One-Stop and Inglewood One-Stop.

Qualified candidates must type a minimum of 45 words per minute (WPM) with an accuracy rate of 90%. Only those candidates meeting this requirement will be invited to continue in the recruitment process. Applications will be considered incomplete for failure to attach keyboarding test certificate at time of application.

The application filing period opens Monday, February 4, 2019 and closes Monday, February 11, 2019 at 5:30 p.m.
 
Only those candidates who best meet the City and Department needs will be invited to participate in the examination process, which will consist of the following components:
 
Written Exam: 25% (Tentatively March 12, 2019)
Performance Exam: 25%  (Tentatively April 2, 2019)
Panel Interview: 50% (Tentatively April 17, 2019)
