Installs, configures, maintains, and upgrades operating systems.
Analyzes and reports system utilization and performance data and, under direction, makes configuration changes to achieve agreed upon service levels.
Identifies and resolves system anomalies and operational problems following established procedures.
Allocates and organizes data storage under supervision.
Configures system interfaces, under the direction of a more senior staff member.
Establishes connectivity to and configures peripherals.
Develops and maintains system documentation.
Installs, configures, and maintains server or mainframe-based communications services, database management software, compilers, and storage management solutions, under the direction of a more senior staff member.
Evaluates, tests, and implements vendor-provided patches and upgrades as directed, in accordance with change management procedures.
Conducts performance analysis.
Performs system back-up and restore operations.
Assists in implementing, maintaining, and testing disaster recovery solutions.
Participates in the evaluation of system tools, utilities, and solutions.
Maintains system security as described in policies and procedures.
Customizes operating system code and generates the operating system, under the direction of a more senior staff member.
Creates and maintains job control language and/or custom scripts.
Works with vendors to develop and implement solutions to specific problems or to meet specific objectives, under the direction of a more senior staff member.
Maintains an understanding of evolving industry trends and technologies.
Install, service, and move servers, networking devices, storage devices, and related equipment, as required.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
OPTION I: Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree* in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field AND two (2) years of recent**, full-time, experience at the level of Los Angeles County class of Application Developer II***, one (1) year of which must include configuring and maintaining complex systems, including configuring and implementing releases, upgrades, or changes to operating systems, servers, and related software.
OPTION II: Two (2) years of recent**, full-time, experience configuring and maintaining complex systems, including configuring, coordinating and implementing releases, upgrades or changes to operating systems, servers, and related software, one (1) year of which must be in a midrange or mainframe environment with formal change management, problem resolution procedures, and back-up and recovery plans.
LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class II - Light: Light Physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
*In order to receive credit for the required degree, you must include a legible copy of the official degree, official transcripts, or official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization at the time of filing or during the examination process but prior to promulgation. Failure to submit the required documentation will result in application rejection.
**Recent experience is defined as experience within the last five (5) years.
***Experience at the level of Los Angeles County class of Application Developer II, is defined as analyzing, designing, evaluating, developing, coding, testing, and maintaining application systems.
SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of disqualification in order to reapply.
EXAMINATION CONTENT
This examination will consist of an interview covering training, experience, and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%.
CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of promulgation.
SPECIAL INFORMATION
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.
