GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Meets and confers with users; installs computer systems ranging from simple to complex; installs and supports integrated local and wide area networks; diagnoses hardware and software malfunctions; provides training to users; reads technical manuals; makes recommendations on hardware and software and related devices; performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Receives requests for proposed projects, drives to site and confers with personnel to discuss equipment, feasibility.
Recommends hardware and software.
Designs systems to meet site and District-wide goals to assure compatability across various platforms.
Meets and consults with users
Installs computer network wiring and other network hardware including routers, hubs, patch panels and network interface cards for work stations and servers in the District's local area and wide area networks.
Installs and configures computers and new software and hardware.
Installs and supports administrative and educational servers; Reads magazines, articles, technical manuals and attends training sessions to keep up with trends in the field, equipment, etc.
Troubleshoots and diagnoses hardware and software malfunctions.
Installs, upgrades and maintains student information systems.
Provides training to users for new and ongoing systems such as e-mail, Internet, back-up systems, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Graduation from high school or its equivalent supplemented by coursework or training at the college level in computer systems.

Experience:
Two years of full time professional experience using and supporting Windows and Apple computers and network operating systems is required Any other combination of training and/or experience that could likely provide the desired skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Skill In:
Operating a variety of hand and power tools such as screwdrivers, hammers, pliers, wire cutters, cable and wire strippers, drills, etc. Driving a motor vehicle safely; Operating a variety of office equipment such as computers, printers, facsimile machines, copiers, calculators and telephones.

Knowledge Of:
Basic concepts and principles of local area and wide area networks; PC and Apple computer server network operating systems; Windows configuration and administration of servers, characteristics, capabilities, and uses of computer operating systems; Principles of electronics, components and electronic systems; Computer systems including hardware and software; Sources of common malfunctions, test equipment and procedures for troubleshooting and repair methods; Safe working practices and procedures.

Ability To:
Analyze and evaluate information processing problems, plans and procedures; Develop solutions to complex technical problems ; Follow oral and written instructions; Exercise good judgment; Establish and maintain good working relationships; Speak clearly and concisely.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
The primary duty of a position in this class is to become fully literate in multiple computer systems which range from basic stand alone systems to highly complex local and wide area networks with multiple functions, programs and components involving highly sophisticated hardware. Incumbents must be able to learn new systems as technology rapidly changes and new generations are introduced. Supervision centers on the accomplishment of work quickly and accurately, minimizing costs and generating good public relations with sites and departments. An incumbent must be technically versatile and work with limited supervision.
